Tips for Taking Pets to the Beach

As the sun shines brighter over Westminster and the waves beckon from nearby Huntington Harbour, more pet parents are eager to share beach days with their furry family members. At Amigo Animal Hospital, we love seeing dogs dig in the sand and splash along the shore, but taking your pet to the beach is best done with a bit of planning and mindful attention to its unique needs.
Start with the Essentials
Before you even hit the sand, make sure you’ve packed the basics. Carry a sturdy leash (most area beaches require one), a portable water bowl, and plenty of fresh water. California’s summer sun can dehydrate pets much faster than we might expect, especially on hot days when panting is their only way to cool off.
A large towel comes in handy to dry off and to create a cool resting spot. For lighter-coated and short-haired dogs, dog-safe sunscreen is a must. Their noses, ears, and bellies are all vulnerable to sunburn, just like ours. Be sure to apply the sunscreen as directed and reapply after swimming.
Safety First, Fun Always
Many beach-loving pups can’t resist diving into the surf, but not all dogs are natural swimmers. Watch closely if your pet approaches deeper water, and avoid letting it venture too far—waves and sudden drop-offs can be unexpectedly hazardous.
Sand heats up quickly and can burn sensitive paw pads, so keep walks brief on especially hot days, and check the temperature with your own hand. Overheating is always a risk; look for signs like frantic panting, drooling, or confusion. Move to shade and offer water at the first sign of distress.
And while it’s easy to get caught up in all the excitement, don’t overlook preventive care: ensure your pet is up to date on vaccinations and has been spayed or neutered. A safe, healthy pet is free to enjoy more adventures with you!
