Having a pet can mean that you may have an emergency from time to time. Emergencies happen to many pets, even if they are kept indoors. It's a good idea to know some basic pet first aid so that you can help your pet when an emergency does happen. There are many types of pet first aid that you can administer at home, but when the problem is more serious, you need to take your pet to the veterinarian for help right away. To see a veterinarian, call our Westminster, CA, office. We at Amigo Animal Hospital are here to help.
Bone Fractures
When a pet has a bone fracture, he may need to see a veterinarian as soon as possible. It's important to transport them to the office safely. Be careful when placing them into the car and do your best to make sure that as little pressure is put on the injury as possible to help avoid making it worse.
Bleeding
If your pet has been injured and there's blood evident, it's time to check the injured area and see what is causing the bleeding. If there is a significant amount of bleeding, you may need to apply pressure to the area firmly to try to stop the bleeding. If you find a large wound or there is an excessive amount of blood, it may be necessary for them to see a vet to get some stitches.
Heatstroke
If your pet is suffering from heatstroke, there should be signs of it. Your pet may breathe heavily and could get dizzy and nauseated after spending time in high heat. When this happens, the pet first aid to use may be to bring his body temperature down quickly with ice and/or cool water. If your pet becomes unconscious or his condition is not improving, he may need to see a veterinarian right away.
